ALL SHAPES and sizes of man's best friend - from puppies to fully trained dogs ready for work - will be offered at South Australia's first working dog auction.
The auction is part of the four-day Combined Insurance Flinders Challenge Sheepdog Trial, kicking off on Thursday, August 12, at Melrose Showgrounds.
Following the success of the kelpie auction at Casterton in Victoria, SA's auction list will be open to all breeds of working dogs but the list is limited to 25 animals, from either triallers or breeders.
Golden Gavel Livestock Auctioneer of the Year winner and Elders Roseworthy's Andrew Lepley will auction the dogs.
The trial is in its second year and supports Booleroo District Hospital and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Flinders Challenge Working Dog Group's Ben Page says there is a great need for a working dog auction in SA.
"There are many farmers who have not got the knowledge or time to train up a dog," he said. "They have the chance to purchase a dog that's been trained and worked in stock situation if that's what they want."
Dogs will be demonstrated

before they are sold, even if they are puppies, and sale catalogues will be available on the day. Buyers need to register from 9am, with demonstrations starting at 10.15am.
The event includes a utility trial on Thursday, August 12, and Friday, August 13 - a test of a working dog's all-round ability, with obstacles and paddock and yard components.
A yard dog trial will run on
Saturday, August 14. and Sunday, August 15, testing skills for yard work, truck loading, and casting in a paddock.
The dog that scores the highest combination of points in utility and yard components will win the Champion of Flinders Challenge title.
A dinner dance will be held on Friday night at Melrose Institute Hall.
