The dog whisperer reveals his secrets

NIGEL AUSTIN
RURAL EDITOR
BEN Page waited most of his working life to pursue his real passion - breeding and training top-quality sheep dogs.
He grew up with stock and always had a passion for dogs from his early days in Papua New Guinea.
Mr Page's love for good working dogs was nurtured while working as a jackaroo on the 4800ha Dumpu station with Sir Bruce and Lady Jephcott in the Ramu Valley in PNG in the 1960s.
He said it was wonderful country because it carried many Brahman-cross cattle to the hectare and involved moving cattle over long distances by horse. That required good dogs.
After pursuing a career in agriculture and then in the corporate world, Mr Page returned to the country in 2000.
He and wife Lyn run Pages Working Kelpie stud at Terka, near Wilmington in the Southern Flinders Ranges. He has developed the property for training dogs and teaching people the art of stockmanship.
Mr Page believes a good dog is one of the most valu-

able assets on any sheep or cattle property.
"I calculated that if a dog lives for 9-10 years and works on a property with a lot of stock, it will save the owner about $300,000 compared to employing people to do the work," Mr Page said.
He believes any young person getting into the livestock sector should do one of his courses to increase their knowledge of handling.
His courses are run by such leading dog handlers as Greg Prince, arguably the best trainer and most successful trialler in Australia.
Mr Page conducts courses with the aim of producing a fully-trained working dog within five months.
"My greatest pleasure is teaching young people with their first dogs," he said. "If people wish to run a course in dog handling somewhere else, we will organise it."
Mr Page is holding the third annual Flinders Challenge Sheep Dog Trial and Working Dog Auction at Jamestown on August 26, 27 and 28.
